Janine Werner‘s works around the abstractions of womanhood. Female forms, the social role of women and, implicitly, female sexuality are the defining themes of her creations, tracing back to the artist‘s very first engagements with such subjects in chalk and pencil during her formative years in which a distinctive style took form.
Ever since Werner has expanded her artistic approach into a broader spectrum of vivid colors, Ink becoming her tool of choice to transform any given idea into an extravagant and vibrant composition that strikes allusions of the ulterior, the unknown behind.
Her characters take on a voyage to different worlds, mystical figures appear. A dancing Medusa, naked divas, female figures shrouded in an ambivalence of sexual ferocity and tender femininity.
The human condition, man’s struggle with an opaque and opressive society rendering him incapable of true expression, Werner adresses this within her compositions. In her works unfiltered emotions break way and the raw, at times bewildering traits of man appear: obsessions, malice and savagery, yet also passion, ennui and existential fatigue.
The subject of a work is dependent of the painting process. Any sharp distinctions are obliterated by the runny, melting ink. In what follows the artist is to decipher the result and give it a compositional frame. The motiv itself is revealed to him in this very process.
The spectator is challenged to descry all the various layers which may shift and alter from different perspectives, posing as conundrums of meanings and relations.
